The 2021-2022 budget includes funds for urban unincorporated King County, allocated through a participatory budgeting process. The Department of Local Services, in collaboration with the Office of Equity and Social Justice and community members, formed a Community Investment Budget Committee to decide on funding allocations, voting requirements, and community-generated project ideas. Petah’s Green Futures (PGF) is one of the selected projects.

PGF aims to enhance ecological health, promote environmental stewardship, and foster community development in Skyway. The program focuses on wetland restoration, education, and workforce development for local youth aged 6-24.

Operating on 2.4 acres of land in Skyway, PGF includes a wetland ecosystem. It engages youth in wetland science, native plant cultivation, and wetland banking for economic development. The curriculum includes career development in wetland science, critical analysis of local wetland studies, and introduction to green technology; restoration projects focusing on native plant establishment and invasive species removal; education on the farming cycle of native plants and their environmental benefits; and education on wetland mitigation banking for participants.

PGF provides valuable educational and economic opportunities for youth, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility and community engagement.
